## TL;DR:

- **is\*hosting has more placement options in Europe and Latin America; Vultr has more inside the US.** is\*hosting also covers Kazakhstan, the UAE, and more of Southeast Asia; Vultr has India, South Korea, and South Africa.
- **At a similar base price, is\*hosting includes backups, and Vultr gives you more disk.** Medium costs $24.99/mo for 3 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, and 40 GB NVMe. Comparable Vultr plans at $24 give 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, and 100-128 GB NVMe, but automatic backups add 20% to the price.
- **is\*hosting Medium VPS and above charges nothing extra per terabyte.** **Vultr overage costs $10/TB**, but the shared pool draws on unused quotas from other servers. At is\*hosting, extending guaranteed bandwidth is paid separately if the base allowance isn't enough.
- **is\*hosting suits a team that needs server administration.** Standard administration is included when a control panel is present; free migration is available with a managed configuration and a panel. RAM, disk, and IPs can be added separately.
- **Vultr suits automated deployment, temporary environments, and managed Kubernetes.** It has Terraform, a CLI, an API, and VKE with a free basic control plane. Hourly billing covers short-term use, but powering a server off doesn't stop the charges — the instance has to be destroyed. These are isolated cases and say nothing about how often suspensions happen, but they're worth weighing when choosing a provider.

## Why Users Look for a Vultr Alternative

In Vultr reviews, the reasons usually come down to cost, server availability, and maintenance.

- **Traffic costs grow.** Once Vultr's shared pool is used up, every extra terabyte costs $10 with heavy outbound traffic, which shows up on the invoice.
- **The location or the resources you need aren't there.** Vultr has no presence in Kazakhstan, the UAE, or Thailand, for example. In the regions it does cover, the choice of configurations can be limited.
- **You need help with administration.** On a regular Vultr VPS, OS setup, updates, and application maintenance stay with the customer. On any VPS with a control panel at is\*hosting, you can get free administration.
- **A suspension pushes people to look elsewhere.** In two Vultr [review threads](https://www.reddit.com/r/Vultr/comments/110rem5/my_vultr_account_suddenly_got_suspended_no/), users describe their entire account being disabled after a security issue on a single server: one reported recovery after three days, [another waited more than 22 hours for a reply](https://www.reddit.com/r/Vultr/comments/1tkd4zl/account_suspended_full_trust_safety_response/).

## Geographic Coverage: Where the Servers You Need Are Available

![is\*hosting and Vultr](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/01-2.png?width=1536&height=364&name=01-2.png)

**is\*hosting and Vultr** both offer broad international coverage, but they distribute their sites differently.

is\*hosting is present in more countries across Europe and Latin America, and has locations in Central and Southeast Asia that Vultr doesn't.

Vultr has more nodes inside the US, several sites in India and Japan, and a presence in South Korea and South Africa.

### Where Vultr is available

Vultr has nine [US locations](https://ishosting.com/en/vps/us), from New York and Miami to Seattle and Honolulu. In Europe, nine cities across eight countries are available, including two UK nodes: London and Manchester.

In Asia, it has sites in Japan, South Korea, India, and Singapore. But in Southeast Asia, the choice is limited to Singapore, and there are no Central Asian locations.

### How is\*hosting coverage differs

is\*hosting offers a wider range of hosting services in Europe, including Central and Eastern Europe. In Latin America, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru join Brazil and Chile. In Asia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia are available, and in the Middle East, the UAE.

is\*hosting places its servers in Equinix, Telehouse, Serverius, EdgeUno, Digital Realty, and M247 facilities, and works with regional last-mile providers.

### Location comparison

Both providers have a Looking Glass, so you can check network connectivity to a given site before you order.

| Region | is\*hosting | Vultr |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Europe | 22+ countries, including Central and Eastern Europe | 8 countries, 9 cities |
| North America | 5 US cities, Canada, Mexico | 9 US locations, Canada, Mexico |
| Latin America | Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Chile | Brazil, Chile |
| Asia and the Middle East | Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, UAE, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia | Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, Israel |
| Africa | None | South Africa |
| Australia | Sydney | Sydney, Melbourne |

Beyond geography, check that the configuration you need is available. Vultr's plan lines are spread unevenly across regions, and a shortage of free capacity can limit deployment and scaling. Before ordering, confirm the region can host servers with your parameters.

## Configurations and Vultr Pricing: What a VPS Price Includes

On monthly billing, is\*hosting Medium and comparable Vultr plans cost about the same, but the resource mix differs. is\*hosting gives you more vCPU, Vultr gives you more disk space. Backups and the billing period affect the final cost as well.

### Which configurations do we compare?

For the comparison, we take servers with 4 GB RAM: Medium at is\*hosting and two NVMe lines at Vultr: High Performance AMD and High Frequency. Vultr's cheaper Regular Performance line runs on SATA SSD and is worth looking at separately from the NVMe configurations.

| Parameter | is\*hosting Medium | Vultr High Performance AMD | Vultr High Frequency |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| vCPU | 3 | 2 | 2 |
| RAM | 4 GB | 4 GB | 4 GB |
| Disk | 40 GB NVMe | 100 GB NVMe | 128 GB NVMe |
| Monthly cost | $24.99 on monthly billing; $21.24 per month on annual billing | $24 | $24 |
| Primary IPv4 | Included | Included | Included |
| Backups | Weekly copies included; daily for an extra fee | Automatic backups: +20% of the server price | Automatic backups: +20% of the server price |
| Billing model | Monthly or annual | Hourly, with a monthly cap | Hourly, with a monthly cap |

vCPU count alone doesn't determine performance: the CPU platform and the workload matter too. Disk size is the clearer difference: both Vultr configurations give more space at the same RAM. If your project needs 100-128 GB, is\*hosting Medium requires a paid extension of its base 40 GB.

### What gets added to the base price

A primary IPv4 address is included with both providers. Backups differ: is\*hosting includes free weekly copies, while at Vultr, enabling automatic backups raises the server price by 20%. On a $24 plan, that's another $4.80, or $28.80 per month.

If you need daily copies, their cost at is\*hosting has to be counted separately as well.

### How the billing period affects the choice

The is\*hosting price of $21.24 a month requires annual billing. Monthly, the server costs $24.99 — $0.99 above the base monthly Vultr pricing for these configurations.

Vultr's hourly model suits temporary servers: you pay until the instance is destroyed, and continuous operation is capped at 672 hours a month. Powering the server off doesn't stop billing; its resources stay reserved. To stop paying for the instance, destroy it.

### Scaling resources

On [is\*hosting VPS](https://ishosting.com/en/vps), RAM, disk space, and extra IPs can be added separately. You expand the one resource you need instead of switching plans. Medium's base 40 GB of disk, for example, can grow while the rest of the configuration stays put.

At Vultr, adding RAM in Cloud Compute means moving to a higher plan with a different set of resources. Extra IPv4 addresses are attached separately. To expand storage without changing plans, there is Block Storage — a separate volume attached to a server in the same location.

## Traffic and Bandwidth: How the Bill Changes as Load Grows

![Traffic and Bandwidth](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/02-2.png?width=1536&height=538&name=02-2.png)

At Vultr, the bill depends on consumption beyond the account's shared pool. At is\*hosting, traffic on Medium and above is unmetered: there is no charge per transferred terabyte, though the bandwidth terms still apply.

### How Vultr pools traffic across servers

At Vultr, the traffic included with each server adds up into a shared account pool, plus 2 TB of outbound traffic per account per month. At 4 GB RAM, High Performance AMD adds up to 5 TB a month, and High Frequency up to 3 TB.

A server's quota accrues in proportion to how long it runs, and the shared pool can be spent across locations.

Inbound traffic and exchange inside a VPC in one data center are free. Transfer between regions over public IPs counts as outbound. Once the pool is used up, each extra gigabyte costs $0.01 ($10 per TB).

### How traffic works at is\*hosting

On is\*hosting plans from Medium up, transferred volume isn't billed by the terabyte in any location. That lets you plan costs without a separate line for outbound overage.

Lower plans work differently. In Europe and the US, Lite includes 2 TB and Start 3 TB; in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Australia, it is 1 TB and 2 TB, respectively.

### Traffic terms compared

| Parameter | is\*hosting Medium | Vultr High Performance AMD / High Frequency, 4 GB RAM |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Included traffic | Unmetered | 5 TB / 3 TB per full billing period |
| Shared account pool | No TB quota for Medium | Server quotas are pooled, plus 2 TB per account per month |
| Overage fee | No charge for extra TB | $10 per TB beyond the shared pool |
| Port speed | Up to 1 Gbps | 1-10 Gbps across the Cloud Compute line |
| Sustained heavy load | Fair Use and guaranteed bandwidth terms apply | Bandwidth is shared; sustained load may be limited |

## Server Management: Tools, OS, and Engineer Support

Both providers support Linux, Windows, and booting your own ISO images.

**A strength of is\*hosting is the standard administration included when a control panel is present.** Setup and maintenance can go to its engineers, and a managed configuration with a panel includes free migration. Support covers standard work, not maintenance of any application. Extended administration is available for a fee, as is a server with none at all.

Regular Vultr VPS runs on an unmanaged model: the provider is responsible for the infrastructure, while OS updates, web server and database configuration, and application security stay on your side.

For containerized applications, Vultr has managed Kubernetes — Vultr Kubernetes Engine (VKE). The basic cluster control plane is free; worker nodes and additional resources are billed separately. This is a separate service: the unmanaged model applies to regular Vultr VPS and doesn't describe what VKE offers.

## Vultr vs is\*hosting Total Cost: Practical Scenarios

![Vultr vs is\*hosting Total Cost](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/03-1.png?width=1536&height=364&name=03-1.png)

Let's compare is\*hosting Medium and Vultr High Performance AMD: servers with 4 GB RAM, a primary IPv4, and backups. For is\*hosting, we use the monthly price of $24.99 without the annual discount (on annual billing, it is $21.24/month).

All servers run for a full month. For is\*hosting, the calculation includes the weekly backups that come with the plan; for Vultr, the paid automatic backup option.

Every scenario assumes 40 GB of disk is enough and no extra IPs are needed. The Vultr account holds only these servers, so the additional 2 TB is fully theirs.

### Scenario 1: one VPS with moderate traffic

A server in Frankfurt transfers 1 TB of data in a month. The load doesn't require extra guaranteed bandwidth.

**is\*hosting Medium VPS:**

- Base plan without the annual discount: $24.99.
- Primary IPv4: included.
- Weekly backups: included.
- Traffic overage: $0.
- **Total: $24.99/mo.**

**Vultr High Performance AMD:**

- Base plan: $24.00.
- Primary IPv4: included.
- Automatic backups: $24 × 20% = $4.80.
- Available traffic: 5 TB from the server + 2 TB per account = 7 TB.
- Overage: none, $0.
- **Total: $28.80/mo.**

Vultr's base plan is $0.99 cheaper, but once backups are enabled, the final bill comes out $3.81 higher.

### Scenario 2: one node with heavy outbound traffic

The same Frankfurt server transfers 10 TB in 30 days. For the calculation, we assume an even transfer rate: about 31 Mbps of sustained outbound flow.

is\*hosting Medium VPS comes with 15 Mbps of guaranteed bandwidth. We add another 20 Mbps to reach 35 Mbps. In a European location, that means two extra 10 Mbps options at $2 each.

**is\*hosting Medium VPS:**

- Base plan without the annual discount: $24.99.
- Weekly backups: included.
- Extra guaranteed bandwidth: 2 × $2 = $4.00.
- Traffic volume overage: $0.
- **Total: $28.99/mo.**

**Vultr High Performance AMD:**

- Base plan: $24.00.
- Automatic backups: $4.80.
- Available traffic: 5 + 2 = 7 TB.
- Overage: 10 − 7 = 3 TB.
- Traffic overage: 3 × $10 = $30.00.
- **Total: $58.80/mo.**

In this scenario, Vultr costs roughly twice as much, even counting the extra bandwidth at is\*hosting. The calculation assumes an even load: if the project needs a higher guaranteed rate at peak hours, the bandwidth cost has to be recalculated.

### Scenario 3: three regions with uneven load

Now the project runs three servers: Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and [New York](https://ishosting.com/en/vps/new-york). Frankfurt transfers 10 TB a month, the other two 1 TB each — 12 TB of outbound traffic in total, including inter-region exchange over public IPs.

The busy node keeps the previous terms: an even flow and an extra 20 Mbps of guaranteed bandwidth at is\*hosting. The other two need none.

**is\*hosting:**

- Three Medium servers: 3 × $24.99 = $74.97.
- Weekly backups: included.
- Extra bandwidth in Frankfurt: $4.00.
- Traffic volume overage: $0.
- **Total: $78.97/mo.**

**Vultr:**

- Three High Performance AMD servers: 3 × $24 = $72.00.
- Automatic backups: 3 × $4.80 = $14.40.
- Shared pool: 3 × 5 TB + 2 TB per account = 17 TB.
- Consumption: 12 TB.
- Overage: none, $0.
- **Total: $86.40/mo.**

Here, Vultr's shared pool covers the Frankfurt node out of the unused quotas of the other two servers, and the extra 2 TB counts once per account. The gap narrows to $7.43 a month: in a distributed project, what matters is total traffic across the infrastructure, not the busiest server alone.

## Who Should Choose is\*hosting and Who Should Stay With Vultr

### When to choose is\*hosting

is\*hosting fits if you need servers in countries Vultr's network doesn't reach: Kazakhstan, the [UAE](https://ishosting.com/en/vps/ae), Thailand, Argentina, or Peru, for example. Another argument is the option to increase RAM and disk space separately while keeping the base plan.

For heavy outbound traffic, Medium and above avoid the per-terabyte charge beyond a quota. Under sustained load, account for the guaranteed bandwidth you need and the cost of extending it.

If your team has no system administrator, standard administration with a control panel and free migration on a managed configuration with a panel are useful.

### When to choose Vultr

Vultr fits teams that maintain their servers themselves and use Terraform, a CLI, and an API to deploy infrastructure. Hourly billing is convenient for temporary environments.

If your applications run in Kubernetes and you need a managed service, Vultr has Vultr Kubernetes Engine (VKE). The basic cluster control plane is free; worker nodes and additional resources are billed separately.

For several servers with uneven traffic, the shared pool helps you use the spare quotas of less-loaded nodes. If total consumption fits inside the pool, there is no overage to pay.

Vultr is also worth considering for several locations inside the US, or sites in India, South Korea, or South Africa. And if the project needs more local disk at 4 GB RAM, High Performance AMD and High Frequency ship with 100 and 128 GB NVMe in the base configuration.

###### Move Your Project From Vultr

## FAQ

### Is is\*hosting cheaper than Vultr?

It depends on the configuration, billing period, and traffic. On monthly billing, is\*hosting Medium costs $24.99 ($21.24 per month on annual billing), while Vultr VPS pricing for High Performance AMD and High Frequency is $24.

is\*hosting includes weekly backups; at Vultr, automatic backups add 20% to the price. With heavy outbound traffic, factor in Vultr's overage and the possible cost of extra guaranteed bandwidth at is\*hosting.

### Does Vultr keep charging for a powered-off server?

Yes. Powering an instance off doesn't release its reserved resources, so billing continues. To stop paying for the server, destroy it. Saved paid resources, such as snapshots, are billed separately.

### Can you add resources without changing plans?

At is\*hosting, you can add RAM, disk space, and IP addresses separately. At Vultr, extra IPv4 addresses and Block Storage volumes attach separately, but adding RAM in Cloud Compute means moving to another plan. Block Storage attaches as a separate volume in the server's location.

### Does unmetered traffic at is\*hosting mean a constant 1 Gbps?

No. Unmetered on Medium and above means no charge per transferred terabyte. Port speed and guaranteed bandwidth are different parameters. A sustained high data flow may require extra guaranteed bandwidth, and its price depends on the region.

### Is Vultr Kubernetes Engine completely free?

No. VKE has a free basic cluster control plane. Worker nodes and additional resources are billed separately, so the final cost depends on the cluster configuration.

### Can you migrate from Vultr to is\*hosting for free?

Yes. With a managed configuration and a control panel, is\*hosting engineers handle the migration for free. Without a panel, migration is paid. You can also move the project yourself.

### How does this compare with Vultr vs AWS or Vultr vs Linode?

Those comparisons answer a different question. Vultr vs AWS weighs a compact cloud against a hyperscaler's service catalog and its per-request billing, while Vultr vs Linode puts two providers with a similar VPS model side by side. This article looks at what changes your monthly bill when you move to a Vultr alternative: locations, included traffic, backups, and administration. If that is your actual question, start from the managed services you need — that is what drives the cost gap there.
