## TL;DR

- On networks with deep packet inspection (DPI), the filter blocks the protocol. A new provider running WireGuard or OpenVPN will fail the same way the old one did.
- DPI does not need to decrypt the payload. It recognizes a VPN by its handshake patterns and by how the server answers probes.
- Changing the port rarely helps: a WireGuard handshake looks the same on port 443.
- Obfuscated protocols disguise the tunnel as ordinary HTTPS. On strict networks in 2026, VLESS with REALITY and Trojan hold up best.
- UDP tunnels get no free pass: China's firewall decrypts the first packet of QUIC connections to read the destination domain.
- Obfuscation cannot unblock an IP that is already on a blocklist, and nothing gets through a network running in whitelist mode.
- Your own server gives you an IP that no other customer shares and lets you update the config the day detection rules change. Keep detectable protocols off that server.

## Why your VPN is blocked and why switching providers may not help

**Your VPN is blocked because the network recognizes the protocol it runs on**, and switching providers may not help because most providers run the same protocols. To a DPI system, WireGuard from one company looks the same as WireGuard from another. This happens under state-level filtering in countries such as China and Iran, and on some corporate and hotel networks. Detection at this level is within reach of an ordinary ISP: a [2024 study](https://www.usenix.org/conference/usenixsecurity24/presentation/xue-fingerprinting) run inside a provider with more than a million users found that all 23 obfuscated proxy configurations it tested were detectable in their default form. Before paying for another subscription, find out which kind of failure you have.

A local fault shows up on every network, and an address block hits one server while others work. With protocol detection, **every server running that protocol fails on this network while working fine on another one**.

A five-minute check tells them apart:

1. Connect with the same config over a different network, such as mobile data. If it works there, the problem is filtering on your main network.
2. Try two or more servers that use the same protocol. If all of them fail, suspect protocol detection. If only one fails, its address is probably blocked.
3. Note when the connection breaks. Instant failure points to the handshake, and a tunnel that connects and then stalls points to throttling.
4. If the server also hosts a plain HTTP page, open it by IP. If the page loads and the tunnel does not, the protocol is the target.

If the results point to a local fault, follow the [VPN troubleshooting guide](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/vpn-not-working-troubleshooting).

### How DPI recognizes encrypted traffic

**DPI identifies a VPN protocol from the shape of its packets, and it never needs to decrypt them.** Packet sizes and fixed header bytes stay visible to anyone on the path.

WireGuard is the easiest case. According to the [WireGuard protocol description](https://www.wireguard.com/protocol/), every handshake starts with an initiation message whose first byte is 0x01, followed by three zero bytes, and the whole message is always 148 bytes long. **A filter rule for this pattern fires on the first packet.** In practice the result is either an outright block or throttling that drops throughput close to zero.

**This is why changing the port does little.** On UDP port 443, the 148-byte WireGuard handshake still starts with 0x01.

OpenVPN gives itself away through the unencrypted opcode in each packet header and the acknowledgments on its control channel, which a filter can match without touching the payload.

Behavior counts as much as bytes. In November 2021, China's Great Firewall started blocking traffic that looks fully random, which hit Shadowsocks, VMess and obfs4 among others. The researchers estimated the rule could block about 0.6% of normal traffic as collateral damage ([USENIX Security 2023](https://www.usenix.org/conference/usenixsecurity23/presentation/wu-mingshi)). Censors also connect to suspected servers themselves and study the replies.

## What is a stealth VPN and what can obfuscation do?

![What is a stealth VPN and what can obfuscation do?](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/vpn-blocked-dpi-fix/operation-en.png?width=1536&height=468&name=operation-en.png)

**A stealth VPN is a VPN whose traffic is disguised so that DPI classifies it as something the network allows, most often ordinary HTTPS.** Obfuscation removes a protocol's signature and helps a server survive probing. **It cannot unblock an IP that is already on a blocklist or get through a whitelist-only network**, and TLS disguises still leave traces. "Stealth" is a marketing label with no standard behind it.

**Treat a DPI-resistant VPN as a configuration you maintain**, like antivirus definitions.

VPN obfuscation works in two broad ways. The first strips the protocol's fixed signature. AmneziaWG adds junk packets and replaces WireGuard's constant header values with your own, and an obfs4 bridge turns Tor traffic into a stream of random-looking bytes. **This defeats signature rules but loses against filters that block anything random**, as China's 2021 rule showed.

The second way makes the tunnel look like a common protocol. Trojan and VLESS wrap traffic in TLS so it resembles a visit to a website. REALITY goes further and borrows the TLS handshake of an existing public site, so **a censor probing the server receives that site's certificate**.

The 2024 study above shows how TLS disguises get caught: it spotted proxies by the handshake nested inside the tunnel, so default settings are rarely enough.

**Encrypting the handshake does not hide it either.** Since April 2024, China's Great Firewall has been decrypting the first packet of QUIC connections at scale to read the destination domain and block by it ([USENIX Security 2025](https://www.usenix.org/conference/usenixsecurity25/presentation/zohaib)). QUIC encrypts that packet with keys anyone can derive, so the domain is readable to a determined censor. For QUIC-based tunnels such as Hysteria2, pick the domain in the handshake as carefully as the REALITY target. Moving to UDP does not take you out of view.

## Which approach fits your VPN blocking problem?

![Which approach fits your VPN blocking problem?](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/vpn-blocked-dpi-fix/protocols-en.png?width=1536&height=516&name=protocols-en.png)

**On strict networks, the most reliable option in 2026 is a protocol that imitates TLS**, such as VLESS with REALITY or Trojan. Each row below pairs a situation with the VPN obfuscation method that fits it.

| **Your situation** | **Possible solution** | **Limitations** | **Details** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Commercial VPN app stalls on one network | Turn on the app's obfuscated mode, or move to a provider that offers VLESS/REALITY | Shared IPs reach blocklists fast; you cannot tune the transport | Subscription section |
| Your own WireGuard server stopped connecting | Switch to AmneziaWG, or replace WireGuard with Xray | AmneziaWG stays on UDP, which strict filters throttle first | WireGuard and Amnezia section |
| Shadowsocks server dies after hours or days | Add a TLS plugin, or move to VLESS/REALITY | Random-looking traffic has been a known target in China since 2021 | Protocol comparison section |
| Strict national filtering, nothing else works | VLESS with REALITY through 3X-UI, or Trojan with your own domain | Needs updates when rules change; whitelist mode blocks everything | Setup guides section |

### If you use a VPN subscription

A subscription is the fastest fix when it works: no server to administer and apps for every device. Many providers ship an obfuscated mode, and **turning it on is the first thing to try**.

The weak spots come from sharing. Thousands of customers share the same addresses, so **those IPs reach blocklists quickly**. Trust is the last question, since a provider sees your connection metadata. The [no-log VPN guide](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/no-log-vpn-meaning) explains what audits prove.

### If you already use WireGuard or Amnezia

You can modify the current tunnel or replace it. AmneziaWG keeps WireGuard's speed and config format and removes the fixed handshake signature. **It remains a UDP protocol**, though, and degrades like plain WireGuard where unknown UDP gets throttled.

Replacing it means moving to Xray with a TCP and TLS transport. The Amnezia app can add Xray VLESS REALITY to the server it already manages. Manual setup is covered in [WireGuard on a VPS](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/wireguard-vpn-on-vps), and other clients in [Amnezia VPN alternatives](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/amnezia-vpn-alternatives).

### If you are considering VLESS, Trojan, or Shadowsocks

Shadowsocks is light and fast, but **its traffic still looks random**, which is what China's 2021 rule targets. Shadowsocks obfuscation through plugins such as v2ray-plugin wraps the stream in WebSocket over TLS and hides the random-looking signature at the cost of some speed. Details are in the [Shadowsocks guide](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/shadowsocks-2026).

Trojan uses an ordinary TLS connection with your own domain and certificate. If the fallback points to a working web server, a client with the wrong password gets that website, so a censor's probe sees a site and nothing else. **A fallback that only returns a redirect does the opposite and becomes a fingerprint of its own.** The price is a domain you have to register and point at the server.

VLESS with REALITY needs no domain. The server borrows the TLS handshake of a public site you choose and holds an x25519 key pair; the client stores the server's public key, a short ID and its own UUID. Transport choice adds another layer of V2Ray obfuscation. For REALITY, the standard setup is TCP with the Vision flow. Xray-core now flags gRPC, WebSocket and HTTPUpgrade as deprecated, so if you need a different transport, the [documentation points to XHTTP](https://xtls.github.io/en/config/transports/grpc.html).

**With no domain and the strictest network, start with VLESS and REALITY.** If you own a domain and want a website in front of the tunnel, choose Trojan.

## How to get started with a self-hosted stealth VPN

![How to get started with a self-hosted stealth VPN](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/vpn-blocked-dpi-fix/start-en.png?width=1536&height=490&name=start-en.png)

A [self-hosted VPN](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/self-hosted-vpn) gives you an IP that no other customer shares and lets you change settings the day detection rules change. **How the server looks to a censor becomes your job too.** In May 2026, a user [ran ByeByeVPN](https://github.com/MHSanaei/3x-ui/issues/4176), an open-source scanner that emulates state DPI checks, against their own 3X-UI server. Two different probes on one port got the same 41-byte canned reply, and the tool flagged the host as a VPN. A REALITY server avoids this by passing unauthenticated probes through to the borrowed site, and Trojan does the same when its fallback points to a working web server.

### Decide whether self-hosting fits your needs

Control is the main gain: the IP is yours alone, and so is every setting down to the site REALITY imitates. **Maintenance is the main cost of a self-hosted VPN**: when a blocking wave hits, nobody pushes new configs for you.

In strict jurisdictions, blocking extends to servers: an IP seen serving WireGuard, OpenVPN or plain Shadowsocks may land on a reputation list that a protocol switch will not clear. **[Keep the server clean](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/linux-server-security) from day one.** Do not run detectable protocols on it "just to test", move SSH off port 22 and restrict it to your own addresses, leave nothing else answering on open ports, and order a fresh IP if the old one ever carried plain WireGuard. A second server in another location gives you a fallback.

Money is the smallest factor: a VPS for a few Xray users costs about as much as a subscription. The full comparison is in [VPS vs. VPN subscription](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/vps-vs-vpn-subscription).

### Choose your setup guide and verify the connection

Both protocols are configured in the 3X-UI panel. For VLESS with REALITY, add a new inbound, select VLESS, set security to REALITY and the flow to xtls-rprx-vision, then enter your target site and generate the keys in the same form. For Trojan, follow [Configuring Trojan in 3X-UI](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/3x-ui-trojan-setup).

Prepare a VPS with KVM virtualization, a public IPv4 address and Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12. For REALITY, choose a target site that is not blocked in your country, supports TLS 1.3 and HTTP/2 and does not redirect. For Trojan, register a domain and point its A record at the server.

After setup, **check the tunnel from the restricted network itself**:

1. Open a heavy page with images and video, over mobile data as well as Wi-Fi. Small pages can load fine even when heavier traffic gets throttled.
2. Check that ifconfig.me shows the server's IP and a DNS leak test shows no leaks.
3. Scan your server from outside with a tool such as nmap. Only the tunnel port and your restricted SSH port should answer.
4. Open the server's IP over HTTPS in a browser. It should show a website, never a panel login or a custom error.

## Build your own stealth VPN on a VPS

**Whether a tunnel survives DPI depends on the protocol it uses and how that protocol is configured.** A self-hosted VPN puts both in your hands.

[is\*hosting VPS](https://ishosting.com/en/vps) offers 3X-UI as a preinstalled image at checkout and runs in 40+ countries. The Start plan with 2 GB of RAM matches the 3X-UI guide's recommendation and costs from $10.19/mo on annual billing; the 1 GB Lite plan starts at $5.94/mo. The tunnel needs a public IPv4 address, so check that option at checkout.

## FAQ

- ### Does changing the VPN port bypass DPI?

Rarely. DPI matches handshake bytes, which stay the same on any port. "Bypass DPI VPN" tips that stop at port 443 help only where filters block by port.
- ### Can DPI detect WireGuard?

Yes, on the first packet, because its handshake has a fixed pattern and length.
- ### Which protocol is hardest to detect in 2026?

VLESS with REALITY and Trojan behind a working website hold up best on strict networks, provided the server does not answer probes like a proxy. No protocol works on a network in whitelist mode.
- ### Does VPN obfuscation work on a phone?

Yes. Xray-compatible clients exist for Android and iOS, and 3X-UI generates a link or QR code to import into the app.
