Hermes Agent has become one of the most-starred AI agent repos on GitHub since Nous Research launched it on February 25, 2026. Stars don't tell you what to build, so this roundup collects real Hermes Agent use cases that developers have posted: what wakes the agent up, what it does, and where it reports back. You'll also find the community projects around the Hermes Agent GitHub repo and a plain verdict on who should wait.

## What Is Hermes Agent?

Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent from Nous Research that runs as a long-lived process on a server, remembers what it learns, writes its own reusable skills, and acts on schedules or on messages from Telegram, Slack, Discord, and other chat apps. It suits developers who want work done while their laptop is closed, which is where it differs from GitHub Copilot and Cursor, coding assistants built around your editor. The [Hermes Agent GitHub repository](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent) showed 255,217 stars and 55,542 forks on October 20, 2026, and Star History charts it passing 180,000 in early June, about three and a half months after launch.

![1](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/hermes-agent-github-use-cases/1.png?width=768&height=400&name=1.png)

The docs describe four pieces worth knowing:

- Persistent memory: two small files, MEMORY.md for the agent's notes and USER.md for what it knows about you, plus a searchable history of past sessions.
- Skills: when the agent works out a multi-step task, it can save the method as a skill and reuse it, using the agentskills.io format.
- Cron: scheduled jobs written in plain language or cron syntax, with results delivered to a chat, a file, or another platform.
- A messaging gateway: one background process that connects the agent to 20+ platforms.

The docs sum up the deployment model in one line: "Talk to it from Telegram while it works on a cloud VM you never SSH into yourself". For a closer look at how its memory and skills compare with the other popular open-source agent, read [Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/hermes-agent-vs-openclaw).

In short, if you need to work with your laptop closed, go with Hermes; if you need inline autocomplete, check out alternatives like Cursor or Copilot.

## Use Case 1: An On-Call Engineer That Drafts the Fix

Teams run Hermes as a first responder: it watches for a bug signal, investigates, and prepares a change that a human approves. This fits small engineering teams and agencies that can't staff a full on-call rotation. A Reddit user [shared](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1vpw4no/) the full loop:

1. Hermes wakes on user feedback, a spike in bugs, or a customer-support inquiry.
2. It investigates and pushes a code update as a pull request.
3. The PR waits for a developer's approval before anything ships.

Another Reddit user, who runs a 20-developer agency, [shared their setup](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1wijyx0/hermes_is_too_good_to_be_true_working_use_cases/) for the routine side: giving Hermes access to the team's IRC, repositories, Cloudflare, and Nginx, where it now handles PR notices, client status updates, and daily iOS and Android builds once the owner approves. If your team loses hours to routine release chores, start here.

A team of about 50 developers [reports](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1veu806/comment/p1qyhky/) using Hermes for preliminary root cause analysis of production bugs and as a note-taker during incidents and postmortems. In every one of these setups, a human keeps the merge button.

## Use Case 2: A Sysadmin for Homelabs and Small VPS Fleets

Hermes works well as a part-time sysadmin that checks servers on a cron schedule and only messages you when something is off. It fits developers who run a handful of self-hosted services and don't want another monitoring stack. One Reddit user [runs 28 cron jobs and 30+ custom skills](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1udesr1/ive_been_asked_many_times_what_my_hermes_actually/): "Every four hours, Hermes checks whether all five of my hosted websites are reachable, whether Coolify on my VPS is running properly, and whether fail2ban has flagged anything suspicious." If you already check a few servers by hand, start with this one.

The same user gets a compact status briefing every morning at 6:30. On Hacker News, a developer [explained](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48552532) using Hermes's orchestrator to turn chores such as "find all containers that need an update" and "update terraform providers" into separate merge requests worked through one by one on a kanban board. Another Reddit user had Hermes [free 300 GB](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1tnfj9d/stop_asking_what_can_hermes_do_thats_not_really/onv2aun/) of stale Docker images and volumes, then add a cron job that cleans up any Docker image left unused for a couple of weeks.

![2](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/hermes-agent-github-use-cases/2.png?width=1063&height=400&name=2.png)

The user with 28 cron jobs runs Hermes on a Mac mini at home, and these jobs only run while the agent does, so they need a machine that never sleeps. If you don't have one, an is\*hosting [VPS with the ready Hermes image](https://ishosting.com/en/vps/apps/hermes-agent) covers that, and if you also host apps with Coolify, our [Coolify guide](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/coolify-vps-self-hosting) sets up the other half of this example.

## Use Case 3: Research Briefs From Feeds You Already Follow

Hermes can read the sources you follow, rank them against your interests, and deliver a short brief, which turns a morning of tab-opening into one message. This suits analysts, founders and engineers who track a fast-moving field. Developer Elias Bourgess [wrote](https://ebourgess.dev/posts/how-i-use-hermes-agent-to-turn-intent-into-artifacts/): "I use Hermes to rank recent FreshRSS items against a profile I set and return the top results," and added that Hermes often generates a Markdown document and sends it straight to Telegram. If you already have an [RSS reader](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/self-hosted-rss-aggregator) or a bookmarks folder, you have the raw material.

A crypto writer known as 0xJeff [runs](https://defi0xjeff.substack.com/p/hermes-200-and-30-skills-later-here) "multiple cron jobs in the morning everyday following X accounts," and a second job where "Hermes looks into my bookmarks, pick 15 and rank them with priority based on my preference/investments/interests. It then summarizes them and proposes next steps."

The pattern behind both:

- A cron job pulls new items from a feed, a bookmark list, or followed accounts.
- The agent ranks each item against what you told it matters to you.
- It writes a short summary as a Markdown file or a chat message.

## Use Case 4: Price, Listing and Market Watchers

Watching prices and listings is one of the simplest Hermes Agent use cases: the agent scrapes on a schedule, compares with the last run, and messages you only when something changes. It works for deal hunting, price tracking, and apartment searches. A Hacker News commenter [put it plainly](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49787187): "I told it to keep an eye on prices. It created a cron job that triggers the scrapes and messages me if anything interesting happened since the last time it checked." If you refresh the same page more than once a day, hand it to the agent.

The user only described a goal; Hermes created the cron job itself. A Reddit user [applied the same idea](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1v06ap3/) to apartment hunting: listing alerts go to the agent's own Gmail inbox, and once a day a cron job reads them through the Himalaya email CLI.

## Use Case 5: A Back Office for Small Businesses

Small [businesses use Hermes](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/how-to-make-money-with-ai-agents) as an always-on operations assistant that answers questions about orders, stock, and leads from inside a chat app the staff already use. It fits shops and service companies with no in-house developer to build dashboards. One Hacker News commenter [wrote about](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48647304) being able to "chat with the Nous Hermes agent over Telegram about pending orders, inventory level, historical product prices." If your team keeps asking one person for the same numbers, an agent with read access can answer instead.

Other public examples go further:

- A Reddit user who manages routes at a pool service company [has Hermes watch service reports](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1u5dtuh/) as they come in and flag problems while the route is still running, messaging him on Telegram and the technician in Slack.
- Another Reddit user [had Hermes find local businesses](https://www.reddit.com/r/hermesagent/comments/1uwidfb/turns_out_just_play_around_with_it_turned_into_a/) with poor or missing websites; "it dumps everything straight into my CRM as leads." The author has Hermes find five leads a day and sells each new site for around CHF 1,000.
- A product team [connected Hermes](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48587502) "to BigQuery, Stripe, Amplitude, etc so that our nontechnical teammates can ask and answer their own data questions via Slack."

When staff and customers can message the agent, it has to be online whenever they do. This is the use case where an always-on VPS matters most.

###### VPS

Run Hermes Agent on a VPS that never sleeps: Python, Node.js and Hermes come preinstalled on Ubuntu 24.

## Use Case 6: A Personal Assistant With a Morning Briefing

A daily briefing makes a good first personal project: Hermes gathers calendar, email, and health data and sends one message before you start work. It suits anyone who starts the day by opening five apps. Keith Rumjahn [wrote about](https://rumjahn.substack.com/p/complete-guide-to-mastering-hermes) asking Hermes to "save it as a skill and run it as a morning cron," with this result: "My mornings now start with a Telegram message: sleep score, calendar, flagged emails…" If you want one low-risk first project, build this one.

On Hacker News, another user [runs](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48590990) "a personal assistant that manages my backlog and provides me morning reminders, solicits for evening updates, and will run overnight research projects for me."

For hundreds more Hermes Agent use cases, the official [User Stories page](https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/docs/user-stories) lists 371 stories in 15 categories, each linked to the original post.

## The GitHub Ecosystem Around Hermes Agent

The community has built web and desktop front ends, skill directories, memory add-ons, and bridges to other coding agents around the Hermes Agent GitHub project. This matters if you'd rather not live in a terminal or want Hermes to coordinate tools you already use.

The most-starred community project, hermes-webui, had 19,037 stars on October 20, 2026, according to the GitHub API, and the Hermes Atlas catalog alone lists 240+ ecosystem tools. Browse the two directories below before you install anything.

![4](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/hermes-agent-github-use-cases/4.png?width=790&height=400&name=4.png)

### Interfaces

- nesquena/hermes-webui (19,037 stars): a web interface for using Hermes from a browser or a phone.
- fathah/hermes-desktop (14,428 stars): a community-maintained desktop companion.
- outsourc-e/hermes-workspace (6,732 stars): a web workspace with chat, terminal, memory and skill views.
- awizemann/scarf (892 stars): a native macOS and iOS app that connects to local or remote Hermes servers over SSH.

### Directories and skills

- 0xNyk/awesome-hermes-agent (5,867 stars): an independent directory of skills, plugins, memory providers, and guides.
- ksimback/hermes-ecosystem (1,322 stars): Hermes Atlas, a catalog of 240+ ecosystem tools with install guidance.
- NousResearch/hermes-agent-self-evolution (5,520 stars): Nous Research's own project for optimizing skills and prompts with DSPy and GEPA.

### Memory and integrations

- itechmeat/open-second-brain (490 stars): keeps Hermes's project memory inside an Obsidian vault.
- xuyang-liu16/hermes-code-bridge (41 stars): uses Hermes as the control plane for Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, and other coding agents.
- mlennie/hermes-mcp (67 stars): an MCP server that lets Claude Desktop and other clients hand tasks to a local Hermes.
- AaronWong1999/hermesclaw (751 stars): runs Hermes and OpenClaw on the same WeChat account.
- 0xNyk/openclaw-to-hermes (39 stars): a migration tool for OpenClaw users.

Telegram, Slack, Discord, and WhatsApp don't need community projects at all: the built-in gateway covers them, and hermes gateway setup walks you through each one.

## Is Hermes Agent Right for You?

![Is Hermes Agent Right for You?](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/hermes-agent-github-use-cases/switch-to-hermes-en.png?width=1536&height=470&name=switch-to-hermes-en.png)

Hermes Agent AI is worth trying today if you have recurring, well-defined tasks and a model with at least 64,000 tokens of context, the minimum the docs set for tool use.

Wait if you can't supervise an agent with shell access: open issues #27284 and #35357 still track gaps in prompt-injection filtering and action approval.

Every one of these Hermes Agent use cases shares the same shape: a schedule or a message triggers the agent, and the agent reports back in a chat or a file. If you can name a task with that shape, set aside an afternoon for it.

### Try it if

- You repeat a task on a schedule, such as checking servers, summarizing feeds, or watching prices.
- You want to reach an agent from Telegram, Slack, or Discord rather than an IDE.
- You already run a VPS or home server that stays on.
- You can review what the agent does before it touches anything important.

### Wait if

- Your main need is code completion and in-editor chat. Copilot and Cursor do that with far less setup.
- You plan to use only small [local models](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/self-hosted-llm). The docs say Hermes "requires at least 64,000 tokens of context" for agent work with tools, while Ollama defaults to 4,096 tokens on GPUs with under 24 GB of VRAM. Raise the context window before you start, and expect trade-offs even then: the agency owner from Use Case 1 saw local models on 16 GB of VRAM loop on tool calls, and a [Hacker News user](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48590990) running Qwen 3.6 27B locally waits one to two minutes for a reply.
- You can't watch API spend. A closed [issue filed against v0.6.0](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/issues/4379) measured about 13,900 tokens of fixed overhead per call; that's an old version, but check your own usage before scheduling dozens of jobs.
- You'd give it production credentials on day one. Open issues track a prompt-injection gap ([#27284](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/issues/27284)) and an approval bypass for non-shell tools such as send\_message and write\_file ([#35357](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/issues/35357)), and the security docs advise a container backend and never running the gateway as root. Some setups above, including the agency in Use Case 1, run Hermes with root access; don't copy that part.
- You need a slow, stable release cycle. Version 0.22.2 shipped on October 15, 2026, and the repo shows tens of thousands of open issues and pull requests.

## How to Get Started

The fastest way to start is an is\*hosting VPS with the [ready Hermes image](https://ishosting.com/en/vps/apps/hermes-agent): Python, Node.js, and Hermes come preinstalled on Ubuntu 24, so you only connect over SSH and choose a model provider.

On a Linux server you already run, the official installer is nearly as quick. On our fresh Ubuntu 24.04 test server, it finished in 190 seconds and installed Hermes Agent v0.22.2 in 2.9 GB of disk; hermes setup then walks you through choosing a model provider.

Rule of thumb: if you want zero setup, take the ready image; if you already have a server, use the installer.

If you prefer containers, the docs also publish a nousresearch/hermes-agent image. Docker installs can't use hermes update; you update by replacing the image.

Our [Hermes on VPS guide](https://blog.ishosting.com/en/hermes-on-vps) is the full Hermes Agent installation guide, including Telegram and running the gateway as a service.

```
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash
source ~/.bashrc
hermes setup
```

![5](https://blog.ishosting.com/hs-fs/hubfs/blog/hermes-agent-github-use-cases/5.png?width=1063&height=400&name=5.png)

On a headless server, the installer warns that its optional computer-use driver couldn't load libXi.so.6. That driver is only for desktop control, and the rest of the install completed normally. The first time you open the web dashboard with hermes dashboard, it asks whether to share usage metrics, with "Send to Nous", "Local only" and "No thanks" options.

## FAQ

- ### What is Hermes Agent on GitHub?

It's the Hermes Agent GitHub repository at github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent, published by Nous Research under the MIT license. The repo holds the agent, its installer, bundled skills, and documentation sources.
- ### Who makes Hermes Agent?

Nous Research. The Hermes Agent Nous Research announced on X on February 25, 2026 works with any OpenAI-compatible API endpoint, according to its docs, so you can pick the model provider.
- ### Is Hermes Agent free?

The Hermes Agent AI software is free and open source. You pay for the model you connect it to, such as an API provider, unless you run local models, and for the server it runs on.
- ### Does Hermes Agent run in Docker?

Yes, from the official nousresearch/hermes-agent image or with Docker as the terminal backend, so the commands it runs stay inside a container.
- ### Is Hermes an AI agent framework or an app?

It's closer to a ready-to-run app than a Hermes AI agent framework you code against: you install it, connect a model, and talk to it. Skills, plugins, and MCP servers are how you extend it.
