We compare is*hosting as a DigitalOcean alternative on geographic coverage, network connectivity, traffic billing, and IP reputation, using the same criteria you apply when choosing infrastructure for multi-region work.
There are usually four reasons, and they’re almost always about money or geography. That’s when people start looking at DigitalOcean competitors.
The bill grows from traffic, not the base price. A basic Droplet looks cheap until you hit the egress limit. After that, every terabyte over the pool adds $10 to the bill. For an edge node or media delivery, overage adds up fairly fast.
Managed services and backups are separate line items. Managed Databases, Spaces (object storage), automated backups (+20% on the plan) are all add-ons.
No Windows and no macOS. DigitalOcean runs Linux and only Linux. If you need Windows Server for 1C, a .NET stack, or licensed software, or macOS to build iOS apps, DigitalOcean won’t work, and you’ll have to find a separate provider.
Narrow geography. 16 data centers in 13 regions: US, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, India, Australia. Outside Europe and North America, in Latin America, the Middle East, and most of Asia, there’s no coverage at all. For multi-region delivery, that’s a wall.

is*hosting bets on maximum geographic diversification: 40 countries, 45 cities, 5 continents. Most cloud providers offer servers in the usual fintech metros. is*hosting goes where the infrastructure is harder and more expensive to build, which is exactly where you most often need a low-latency edge node.
Behind this are direct peering links with Tier 3+ data centers (Equinix, Telehouse, Serverius, EdgeUno, Digital Realty, M247) and regional last-mile providers.
DigitalOcean keeps 13 locations in the classic hubs: US, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, India, Australia. Instead of reach, it concentrates on a dozen mature markets and invests in what surrounds the server, including managed services like Managed Kubernetes and a convenient interface.
In Europe and North America both providers cover the basics. Beyond them, DigitalOcean has no coverage in Latin America and most of Asia. But if your project doesn’t go beyond those two macro-regions, the difference of 45 against 13 locations may simply be irrelevant to you.

A nominally low base price almost never turns out to be the final number on your invoice. IPv4, backups, traffic, and OS licenses usually surface as a separate line of costs. Some providers include them in the plan right away, some don’t. So the DigitalOcean droplets pricing on the page is a starting point rather than a total.
The entry plan on both providers (1 vCPU / 1 GB RAM / 20–25 GB SSD) costs $4-6/mo. For a real multi-region load, an app, a database, an Nginx cluster, and a couple of WordPress sites, 1 GB of RAM runs out before you notice.

On paper, the plans are close on price.
With backups, the difference is this: on DigitalOcean it’s +20% on the plan, on is*hosting it’s free by default.
With migration the difference isn’t about whether you can move the data yourself, which you always can on both providers. It’s about whether a free option exists alongside that. DigitalOcean doesn’t offer one: the move is entirely on you (Self-Managed services). is*hosting lets you hand this process to its engineers for free, and if you’d rather keep migration under your own control, you can do all of it yourself, the same way as on DigitalOcean.
Port speed rarely becomes a problem. What we account for is how overage is billed.

If a fast port at launch matters to you, DigitalOcean gives you up to 10 Gbps. But once the pool runs out, each extra terabyte adds $10 to your bill. On is*hosting Medium plans, and above that limit simply doesn’t exist for you.
Both providers share one goal, getting a server from a bare image to production as fast as possible. The difference is who does that work.
DigitalOcean gives you the tools (a Terraform provider, CLI, prebuilt images) and leaves the rest to you.

A separate note on operating systems, because the difference here is about possibility rather than convenience. DigitalOcean works with Linux only. is*hosting runs Windows Server from 2012 R2 through 2022 (license +$20/mo, or bring your own) and macOS Sonoma, Ventura, and Monterey. If your project needs Windows for 1C or .NET, or macOS for Apple builds, that scenario is fully closed on DigitalOcean.
If you already have a Terraform IaC pipeline and your own team to support it, DigitalOcean has a more mature CLI-and-provider combination. If what matters more is support for non-standard operating systems — Windows, macOS, Mikrotik — plus the option to hand administration off at no cost, is*hosting comes out ahead.
Take a common scenario: a mid-tier server as an edge node, one additional IPv4, weekly backups, and traffic that runs 3 TB past the pool per month. This is where DigitalOcean pricing and is*hosting diverge.

If traffic fits inside the pool, the difference in base price is no more than $3 a month.
The final economics depend heavily on your load profile, so DigitalOcean VPS pricing only tells half the story until you factor traffic in.

Choose a VPS from is*hosting if you need edge nodes, traffic routers, SSL terminators, or local API proxies in high-latency regions.
Get a DigitalOcean server if you’re a POC-stage startup, already tied into the ecosystem with managed services, and you value interface convenience over breadth of geographic coverage.
For a distributed system that has to cover both scenarios at once, running both providers, a core on DigitalOcean plus edge nodes on is*hosting where DigitalOcean doesn’t reach, can work out better than choosing just one.
